Did you know that as many as one-third of working Americans do not earn enough money to meet their basic needs or that over 36,000 families in the Mohawk Valley live at or below the poverty level? These individuals are walking a financial tightrope - they are barely able to get by, with no ability to save for college, a home or for retirement.
Some other startling facts:
- Today, 1 of 3 families use credit cards to cover their basic needs including rent, utilities and food.
- From 1989-2001, credit card debt in America nearly tripled and bankruptcies jumped nearly 125%.
- Generation X-ers are the first generation to fair worse than their parents' generation.
With your help, United Way of the Valley & Greater Utica Area is working to help these families become more economically self-sufficient and financially independent.
